Day 1: Portugal: From Global Leader in World Commerce to Leader in Global Citizenship    

Arrive in Lisbon, Portugal. 

Attend the "Welcome to Portugal" and  Keynote Address. Join Ambassador Katz and others for an interactive conversation about Ambassador Katz’s experience as a diplomat in Portugal and how it shaped his views as a global citizen. Learn more about the Portuguese system of government and how it fits into the European Union. Engage with Ambassador Katz as he speaks about his previous career in law, his transition to politics, and beyond. 

Later join the entire group to enjoy the sunset like a Lisboeta at one of the hippest rooftop bars in the city. Drinks and petiscos (Portuguese hors d'oeuvres) provided.

Day 2: Politics, Life as an Expat, and Doing Business in Portugal   

Enjoy an exclusive tour of the U.S. Embassy in Portugal. Learn about the mission of the embassy as you meet the American diplomats who make it all happen. (Subject to the security clearance of each participant, and may change without prior notice.) 

Join an authentic four-course lunch and wine pairings with local gastronome, the Earl of Rocamor, D. André Meunier da Silva (Quiroga). Learn about the evolution of Portuguese food and wine directly from the experts. Participate in a unique wine tasting that directly benefits an innovative social impact project that serves up-and-coming local artists. 

Spend the afternoon participating in two exhilarating panel conversations:

Session 1.1: Understanding Portuguese Politics and the Role of the European Union

Session 1.2: Doing Business in Portugal as a Foreigner: Opportunities, Support, and Challenges

Day 3: The Portuguese Riviera, Culinary Superstars, and Food and Wine as Cultural Ambassadors  

Participate in a guided tour of the quaint seaside towns of Cascais and Estoril. Enjoy an unforgettable lunch complete with wine pairings in one of the region’s most well-known restaurants.

Visit Cabo da Roca, the westernmost extent of the European continent, and other popular sites in the area. Discover how Cascais served as a safe haven for many of Europe’s exiled royal families during World War II.

Spend the afternoon learning more about Portugal's edible (and drinkable) cultural heritage from local experts:

Session 2.1: Portugal as the New Culinary Destination: The New Future of Portuguese Food and Wine

Day 4: The Model Society and the Million-Dollar Question about Health Care 

Spend the morning on a private guided tour of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Learn about the history of this magical place as you visit 8th century castles and find your way through the mind-boggling collections of lakes, grottoes, waterfalls, fake doors and secret tunnels of a neo-gothic mansion. Enjoy a typical three-course lunch complete with local wines and gorgeous views of the area.  

Return to Lisbon to participate in two enlightening panel conversations: 

Session 3.1: Defining Global Citizenship in the Context of Portugal  

Session 3.2: Viewing Health Care Through the Global Lens: Basic Human Right or Commodity?

Day 5: Let's Talk About Money

Day 6: Wine Country à Portuguesa

Travel two hours east of Lisbon to Alentejo, a prolific wine region recently named the "New Tuscany".  

Take a private tour of one of the area's most well-known wineries. Participate in an interactive Harvest 101 workshop facilitated by the winemaker himself. He'll teach you everything you need to know about the region's grape varieties and the harvesting process. 

Participate in a wine tasting with the vineyard's owner, winemaker, and staff.

Tour an enchanting village made of marble. Enjoy a gourmet lunch and wine pairings with Chef Pedro Mendes. 

Return to Lisbon and enjoy your last evening in Portugal as you wish. Dinner on your own. Recommendations provided.   


Day 7: Free Day In Lisbon  

Enjoy a free day in Lisbon. We can help you arrange roundtrip transportation to the beach, private photoshoots, walking tours, culinary experiences, etc. 

Meet the group early evening for a farewell toast. Dinner on your own. Recommendations provided. Overnight in Lisbon.    


Day 8: End of Program 

Departure for U.S.A
